Planted in the Church of Charity

Statement to the people of Cuba and the world, participants and sequence.

Listen to audio from the Church of Charity located in Central Havana at Salud and Campanario.

Havana. ( PRC Executive Director, via telephone ) – The family that has held totalitarian power in Cuba for 53 years, far too long. The people want change, especially since the only thing demonstrated is that there is neither the political will nor the capacity to bring development and prosperity to Cubans. Their most internationally recognized success has been turning Cuba into a global brothel of corruption, where ethical and moral values have descended to shameful levels. Since the coup on January 1, 1959, the country has experienced economic, political, and social regression.

We are taking advantage of Pope Benedict XVI's visit to make it known that there is an opposition, despite the fact that world politicians look the other way and the regime denies it. The demands we make may seem anachronistic in today's world, but they don't exist in Cuba, even though some are enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which Cuba has signed, violating all of them daily. We want a new government; we want our rights.

Immediate demands:

– Unconditional freedom for political prisoners, an end to the repression and persecution of opponents of the regime.

– Increase in salaries and pensions for retirees in line with the current cost of living.

– Right to private property, freedom of expression and association.

– Access to uncensored information, including the internet, to the media, or the right to create alternative media.

– Freedom of movement within the Island that includes the right of Cubans to leave and enter the country.

– A national pact was established, leading to the formation of a provisional government with the aim of creating the legal framework for the functioning of the rule of law. A roadmap with this objective will be presented.

– We ask the people to call a national strike and take to the streets to demand their rights.

Sequence.

Havana. (World Radiography, Via telephone) - On Tuesday the 13th, several churches across the country were peacefully occupied by ordinary opposition members to publicize the demands of the people. In some churches, they were forced to leave by religious officials. In La Caridad, the opposition members have received all kinds of pressure and threats. They specify that their action is not against the church or the Pope's visit, but rather to use the opportunity to publicize their demands.

At the Church of San Isidoro in Holguín, a report was made via telephone regarding the inappropriate behavior of Bishop Emilio Aranguren (Telephone 52 68 1075), who allegedly snatched the phone from Rubier Cruz, director of Impacto Juvenil Republicano in that province. Cruz and other activists did not resort to violence, leaving that action to the other party. They also read the same statement that was read by Ms. Maria Rosa Naranjo Nieves, national treasurer of the PRC. FLAMUR activists were also present at the church. The telephone number for the Apostolic Nunciature in the province is 52 92 2058.

In Pinar del Rio, the Cathedral Church was also occupied by José Rolando Cásares Soto, director of the PRC in the province, along with a group of opposition members. Until communication with him was possible, the officials maintained hostility. He clarified that the action was not directed against the religious institution. The last that was known was that he made the imprudent decision to go to the door in search of telephone coverage and was captured. Communication with this group was lost.

In Las Tunas, Maiky Martorell Mayans, Ramón Velázquez Toranso, Roberto Ramayo López, Emiliano Calvo Díaz, and others (whose names have not been confirmed) were arrested early in the morning and released at nightfall. The San Gerónimo church was occupied for a few hours before being vacated, following strong pressure from church representatives.

This will be monitored.
