Las Tunas, Cuba. (RM, audio at the end) - The aggressor, Osmany Carrión, severed the left hand of activist Sirley Ávila León and made other cuts between her shoulder and head and thighs.

Former delegate of People's Power and activist Sirley Ávila León was attacked with machetes at 3 pm on Sunday at her home in Limones, Majibacoa , by a worker from her farm, reported activist David González from Las Tunas.

The aggressor, Osmany Carrión, severed Ávila León's left hand and made other cuts between his shoulder and head and thighs, the activist details.

Then, Carrión threw Ávila León about 15 meters from the house, near an animal corral, and fled.

The nearest neighbor to the property is about 50 meters away, but Ávila León had his cell phone in his pocket and managed to call a neighbor, who sent for medical services and the police.

The victim was taken to the Ernesto Che Guevara hospital in Las Tunas and had to undergo about 10 hours of surgery, González said.

Carrión, who resides in the town of Buena Vista, had been living for more than 3 months on the farm of Ávila León, who was in charge of tending the land, says González.

Hours after the incident, Carrión surrendered to the police, but the motives for the attack are still unknown.

Ávila León was a delegate of the People's Power for the 37th district of the municipality of Majibacoa, in Las Tunas, and tired of the ineffectiveness of this organization to solve the problems of her community, she denounced it to opposition organizations, which she would later join.

She is currently a member of the opposition organization Republican Party of Cuba
